This textbook presents classical mechanics as one of the foundations of physics. It describes mechanical stability and motion in physical systems that range from the molecular to the galactic scale. In addition to the standard topics of mechanics in the physics curriculum, this book includes an introduction to elasticity theory and its application in selected modern engineering applications, such as the dynamic mechanical analysis of viscoelastic materials. The text also addresses many aspects of numerical mechanics, from solving ordinary differential equations, including molecular dynamics simulations of many particle systems, to the finite element method. Accompanying Mathematica programs or parts of them are provided in connection with selected examples.
