The developments in computer cartography have primarily aimed to improve computer technology so that computer maps could increasingly match the quality of paper maps. However, computers offer far greater possibilities for the representation of cartographic information. They provide a new medium that can present information dynamically and interactively, and they offer a new technique that enables the rapid and therefore variable representation of spatial information. This potential is demonstrated here and made usable for cartography. To this end, a subfield of computer-based visualization, computer animation, is examined to see how it can be used for an enhanced representation of cartographic information.
