Depression and dementia are by far the most common psychiatric disorders in the second half of life. According to extensive studies by the World Health Organization, both conditions fundamentally impair the quality of life of those affected, even more so than almost all physical illnesses. However, the frequency and severity of these disorders are not always adequately addressed due to insufficient diagnostic and therapeutic knowledge. The reported diagnostic and therapeutic deficit for depression and dementia in older adults is a politically sensitive and intolerable issue.
