The number of hand injuries is diverse and virtually limitless. One third of all workplace accidents involve the hands and fingers. Considering that in Austria in 1952, out of 130,265 workplace accidents reported to the General Accident Insurance Institution, 36.75% were hand and finger injuries, and that in West Germany the same year, 1.6 million workplace accidents were reported with a similar percentage of hand and finger injuries, one can grasp the immense significance of these injuries and their treatment for the workforce of a nation. The purely economic impact of these injuries, not only on the individuals affected but also on society as a whole, can also be easily assessed based on these figures. It is a significant achievement of Bohler's to have recognized this early on and to have focused on the treatment of hand injuries.
