Based on five megatrends, the authors anticipate future leadership developments: individualization, flexibility, demographics, social and economic changes, social responsibility, and sustainability. They demonstrate that the leaders of the future will need to act proactively more than ever while also possessing the ability to respond to diverse short-term demands. Various technical and social skills, such as communication abilities in dealing with social media and new forms of transparency, networking, communication, and coordination, are classified as essential leadership competencies. The authors conduct an exploratory interview study with 20 senior consultants, academic leadership experts, and senior/top managers.
