Product details
The Sailing-Ship Effect describes the potential reaction of an old technology to the emergence of a new one, whereby it continuously improves its performance. Using patent data from the automotive industry, the authors illustrate that this Sailing-Ship Effect is present in propulsion technologies. The fact that the automotive industry is largely characterized by path dependencies has led to the perception that it is more efficient to focus development efforts on conventional combustion technologies rather than investing significantly in alternative drive forms.
