Constraint programming provides methods for the efficient modeling of systems or for solving problems where only incomplete information is available (e.g., decision systems, optimization problems, analysis of stochastic processes), as well as for solving combinatorial problems (resource management) or in the development of complex deduction systems. This textbook offers a compact introduction to constraint programming. In addition to general theoretical foundations, it presents languages, methods, and procedures for modeling and solving constraint problems, examines their application areas, and illustrates them with typical examples such as scheduling, finance, optimization, simulation, and diagnosis. The book is aimed at computer science students in their main studies and is based on a one-semester lecture.
