Among all warehouse functions, order picking is usually considered the most important. One of the central planning issues involves the formation of picking orders, known as order batching. Sören Koch develops genetic algorithms to solve the order batching problem, which he evaluates in extensive numerical experiments. The results obtained are of great practical relevance for the logistics industry and demonstrate the optimization potential that the application of operations research methods holds.
