When we think of grains, we first think of bread and muesli, but grains are also used to make beer, spirits, and whisky. We enjoy wine, sugar, coffee, cocoa, and tea – all pleasures provided to us by plants: pleasure plants. Humans have been using them for thousands of years for enjoyment, stimulation, relaxation, intoxication, or as remedies. This includes drugs like hemp, opium, and cocaine. Plant-based drugs were known to all cultures and were often associated with magic and religious rituals due to their potency. However, flowers, exotic spices, oriental shrubs, and Indian trees also bring us pleasure. Without them, there would be no gingerbread, spiced nuts, incense, or fragrant perfumes. Thus, pleasure plants appeal to our senses, and there is likely no one who does not use at least one of their products. This book discusses the origins and botany of pleasure plants.
