The rapidly changing teaching methods in student education necessitated a thorough rethinking of the concept of the first edition. The texts from the first edition were stripped of content aimed more at specialist candidates and were revised to better suit a student audience. Additional chapters address important emergencies, infections during pregnancy, and particularly the key symptoms that must be included in any study textbook. The key symptoms, along with the case quiz designed to train diagnostic thinking from the key symptom to diagnosis and the subsequent therapy, reflect the problem-oriented teaching approach that has now been adopted by most universities in Germany following the introduction of the current licensing regulations. Naturally, the book also serves a special purpose.
