Carinthia is described in the social science literature as a "special case" of Austrian contemporary history. The ethnic conflict between the Slovenian-speaking minority and the German-speaking majority, the political success of the "Third Camp," and a political culture associated with corruption scandals, exclusion of outsiders, and defamation are characteristic features. Christian Dorner-Hörig examines how these peculiarities are related to the sociogenesis and psychogenesis of Carinthia. It can be demonstrated that the establishment of a feudal patrimonialism at the beginning of the modern era hindered the central authority's access to the regional integration level of Carinthia. The resulting fragmentation of the region into smaller ruling and administrative units favored the preservation of segmentarily defined configurations.
