Susanne M. Hoffmann digitally reconstructs the lost celestial globe of Hipparchus of Nicaea and researches the origins of his data and sources. Using error analysis in the dataset, she examines references to Babylonian and Greek measurement methods, as well as potential errors that may have arisen during measurements or through copying processes. Although Hipparchus is known for his precise observations according to Ptolemy in the Almagest, he may not have necessarily observed all the data himself. He could have also utilized sources from earlier Babylonian and Greek astronomers. Therefore, the author begins her analysis with MUL.APIN, reinterprets the GU text and the shitqulu text, and discusses, among other things, the writings of Euclid, Eratosthenes, Aratus, and Hypsicles. In conclusion, the author organizes the texts and datasets chronologically and designs.
