In the theoretical part, the book conceptualizes sustainable development as a regulative idea, presents the systematic relation to the institutional level, elaborates on the fundamental challenges for a policy of sustainability from a socio-theoretical perspective, and outlines four basic strategies for sustainability-oriented institutional reforms: reflection, self-organization/participation, power/conflict balancing, and innovation. In the second part (institutional atlas), a broad spectrum of possible institutional approaches is presented and discussed, and a recommendation is formulated for each approach.
