Michael Schleich presents the optimizations of the state building code of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) that can be derived from a comparison with the English building regulations. His goal is to identify potential cost savings from the comparison of the efficiency of these building codes. To this end, the author applies the method of economic analysis of law, cost-benefit analysis, and transaction cost analysis. Through three case studies of residential buildings, he empirically investigates which of the two building codes is more efficient under which aspect.
