Vehicle operation encompasses all aspects of automotive technology that take into account the characteristics and limitations of the human driver. This includes issues of ergonomics as well as questions regarding user-oriented interface design. Only through understanding and simulating driver behavior can the simulation of technical systems be made realistic, addressing questions of optimal vehicle automation and even delving into traffic psychological aspects. The book discusses the division of roles between drivers and assistance systems, information processing, and the implications for system design and their development stages, driver modeling, and multimodal interaction—the flow of information between the driver and the systems.
