Product details
The theme of suicide plays a significant role in world literature: In Shakespeare's works, there are 13 instances of voluntary death, and the Bible contains eleven suicides. The film industry has also long been interested in the motif of weariness of life and longing for death. Recent studies on the main motives for suicide in films show that it is less about psychiatric disorders leading to suicide, but rather social difficulties and conflicts, such as relationship breakdowns, separations, parent-child conflicts, partnership issues, financial troubles, loneliness, bullying, and interpersonal harassment, as well as societal prejudices regarding race and sexual orientation, guilt, and shame, that drive film protagonists to take their own lives. This challenges the prevailing psychiatric teaching that 90% of all suicide acts occur against the backdrop of a mental disorder. At least for film characters, this thesis is certainly not accurate, as only about 20% of all film protagonists take their lives due to a psychiatric issue. This book addresses all the motives for voluntary death in the films included through entertaining contributions and professionally grounded analyses. It is aimed at both film enthusiasts from the fields of psychiatry, psychotherapy, and psychology, as well as interested laypeople who wish to better understand the motivations of film characters.
