Magnetic bearings for contactless support of rotors are gaining increasing importance, for example in vacuum technology, machine tools, and turbomachinery. The main advantages are the absence of contact and the adjustable dynamics of the bearing. These features enable new designs, operation without mechanical wear, and thus reduced maintenance efforts, as well as high rotational speeds with the possibility of active vibration damping. In contrast, the complexity of the bearing requires knowledge from the fields of mechanics, electrical engineering, and control engineering. The book covers the theoretical foundations of rotor dynamics, electromagnetic circuits, and control engineering necessary for understanding electromagnetic bearings.
