Volume 1 of the five-volume work "Manufacturing Processes" addresses the fundamentals of machining with geometrically defined cutting edges, starting from the common principle of operation. It presents the stresses and the appropriate design of cutting tools, as well as the sensible use of cutting materials. Following this, a detailed examination of individual process variants is possible. An extensive chapter on the machinability of the most important workpiece materials, such as steels and cast iron, lightweight metal alloys, and high-temperature resistant materials, provides a broad understanding of the interrelationship between material, cutting material, and process parameters. In the eighth edition, the book has been expanded with new chapters on the machinability of magnesium and non-metallic materials, as well as on the use of numerical methods.
