In his systematic analysis and critique of the system-theoretical media theories of Talcott Parsons, Niklas Luhmann, and Jürgen Habermas, Ulrich Bachmann fills a gap. Although media theory serves as the central conceptual hinge for solving the problem of social order in modern societies for all three classics, this theoretical piece has been scarcely received in action-theoretical sociology so far. In his systematic as well as theory-historical interpretation, Ulrich Bachmann demonstrates that system theory, through the concept of the communication medium, offers an interesting opportunity for action-theoretical reflection on the tendencies of autonomization in modern orders.
