In SOS Children's Villages around the world, women live and work as mothers caring for (social) orphans. This presents a unique opportunity to empirically investigate the professionalization of motherhood. In the context of field research in Austria and Bolivia, Sarah Speck analyzes the practices of these institutions. The core of her qualitative study consists of case-reconstructive evaluations of interviews with SOS Children's Village mothers. Furthermore, the author explores what happens when specific notions of good motherhood are exported to other sociocultural contexts. Her book operates at the intersection of gender theory, sociology, and cultural anthropology, engaging with debates about the structural transformation of work, current gender relations, and cultural globalization processes.
