The concept for method engineering developed by a working group at the University of St. Gallen includes standardized documentation, engineering-oriented development, and the integration of various methods for information system development. The information system development of a company is subject to a continuous process of improvement and adaptation to newer insights and developments. New information technologies such as object orientation, multimedia, or client-server systems require the adaptation and supplementation of established development methods. Integrated methods that cover the organizational and software development from informal requirements analysis to system specification, project management, and quality assurance do not currently exist. Instead, various partial methods of system development and project management must be combined for each development project.
