In over 95% of all deceased individuals in Germany, there are still no autopsy-confirmed findings regarding the actual cause of death and any accompanying diseases. Health policy decisions regarding disease management programs, prevention, and structural measures in healthcare, which are based on such uncertain data, do not meet the required evidence. This also has negative effects on the quality of medical diagnostics and therapy, and thus on patient safety. Furthermore, the very different legal foundations in state laws regarding corpses, burial, and cemetery matters make it difficult for affected relatives and medical professionals to practically implement often conflicting interests. Clinical and anatomical dissection is currently considered to be in the know.
