The IT landscapes in healthcare are characterized by heterogeneous structures and media breaks. To achieve the vision of "Seamless Healthcare," all IT systems involved in the processes must be integrated. Medical devices are often overlooked in this context, yet they are an important source of data and an essential component of medical processes. The author addresses the concept of service-oriented device integration and realizes a conceptual design as well as a prototypical implementation of a framework based on existing SOA design patterns and new pattern candidates, using the Devices Profile for Web Services (DPWS). The viability of the concept is demonstrated through five realistic scenarios.
