Schizophrenic psychoses are heterogeneous disorders characterized by a broad spectrum of psychopathological symptoms alongside various neuropsychological deficits and cerebral changes. Modern imaging techniques, such as positron emission tomography and functional magnetic resonance imaging, can visualize these cerebral changes. Current studies indicate that three subsyndromes of chronic schizophrenia—delusional, astenic, and disorganized symptomatology—can be distinguished. These subsyndromes exhibit differential associations with clinical and neuropsychological abnormalities and correspond less to specific cerebral disorders than to an overall altered pattern of activity.
