Product details

Martin Michael Lang provides a theoretical contribution to the understanding of Brazil's civil democracy and the derivation of structural demands for the stability of the political system. The approach to the subject is made through the analytical and political interpretation of the past of the central works of Alexis de Tocqueville and Gilberto Freyre. The author develops a theoretical model of Brazilian civility from the four theoretical elements of geography, aristocracy, religion, and slavery, which is ultimately supplemented by relevant demands of modern democratic civility in the sense of Tocqueville. The thesis underlying this work, in agreement with Freyre, posits that the essential character of a political system can be traced back to its origins and analyzed from there.
