This book addresses the historical conditions that have led to the current state of ecosystems under human influence. It deals with the prerequisites and fundamental assumptions on which the reception and reconstruction research of environmental history is based. Environmental history is thus a central element of ecological education. Without an understanding of the systemic connections and the long-term effects of human actions, their consequences, and side effects, the hope for a different, sustainable relationship with nature becomes futile. Climate change is an example of the significance of the historical dimension. The melting of glaciers is known only through comparisons with historical documents.
