The lack of comprehensibility of politicians is repeatedly a cause for public criticism. But what does it mean exactly when a politician's speech is described as "incomprehensible" or "comprehensible"? Is the comprehensibility of politicians objectively measurable considering the individual understanding prerequisites of German voters? What individual and societal processes influence the communication between politicians and citizens? What characteristics of the communication process lead to political language being perceived as comprehensible or incomprehensible? Answering these questions is challenging given the current state of research. Political science and communication studies have hardly addressed this topic so far. Therefore, the aim of this work is to take a first step towards closing this research gap.
