Research has primarily focused on comparing the similarities and differences between the theoretical approaches of Foucault and Bourdieu. However, such a polarizing approach limits the perspective on a more productive way of engaging with their work: Foucault and Bourdieu should be understood in a complementary manner, where the differences are seen not as oppositions but as enhancements. Anja Trebbin demonstrates how Foucault's analyses of individual power practices can be connected with Bourdieu's investigations of social relations to create a method with comprehensive epistemological value. The author explores how a complementary interpretation can reveal new aspects of the relationship between Foucault's and Bourdieu's theories. Additionally, she shows how such a positioning of both thinkers can provide insights for political practice.
