The State of the Athenians, preserved on a papyrus, is one of the most important sources regarding the history and constitution of Athens. It provides a historical overview from the time of (pre) Solon to the rule of the Thirty (from the late 7th century to 403 BC); this is followed by a detailed description of the institutions and officials during the period of the text's creation (335-322 BC). Although the authorship by Aristotle is disputed, there is no doubt about the document's significance for historical science.
