"Wayang" refers to the Indonesian puppet theater and derived forms of folk theater. In recognition of the cultural and historical significance and the high artistic level of Wayang, UNESCO included this theatrical tradition in the World Heritage List in 2003. This book not only provides a new, systematic introduction and overview of the character world of Wayang, particularly of shadow play, but also illustrates it with a uniquely rich collection of images of this quality.
