In November 1942, the incredible happens: Adolf Hitler, the Führer, dies in an accident, leaving behind a gigantic power vacuum. The OKW seizes the opportunity to eliminate the divided Nazi leadership and form a military government that aims to end the atrocities of the Nazis and try to maneuver the Reich out of its misery. It quickly becomes clear that if Germany wants to be treated as an equal partner in the desired peace negotiations, the Wehrmacht must first achieve at least a military stalemate. Initially, the exposed troops of the 6th Army are withdrawn from the Stalingrad area, thus saving them from encirclement. Then, in May 1943, the decisive battle is to take place on the Eastern Front: the Kursk salient presents the opportunity to encircle and destroy large troop contingents of the Soviets, significantly straightening the front line.
