Stanley Cavell (1926) is a boundary-crosser between philosophy, cultural studies, and literature. Since his first collection of essays, "Must We Mean What We Say," he has staunchly defended skepticism against all attempts at refutation by Anglo-American analytical philosophy. The other part of his work consists of an engaged philosophical discussion of Shakespeare's plays and the writings of American transcendentalists, but especially of Hollywood cinema. Cavell's explorations between Descartes, Freud, Heidegger, Kant, Rawls, Wittgenstein, and the film comedies and melodramas of the 1930s and 1940s, Shakespeare's "The Winter's Tale," or Thoreau's "Walden" not only create a personal atlas of philosophical images but also bring them into ever new constellations.
