The steam navigation on the German Rhine is history. The last passenger steamer of the Köln-Düsseldorfer, the Goethe, delivered in 1913 and remodeled several times, had its fire extinguished in 2008; the other KD steamers had already disappeared for a quarter of a century by then. The last steam tug on the Rhine, the Oscar Huber, was taken out of service over 40 years ago and is now accessible to the public as the only paddleboat in Duisburg-Ruhrort - cold. Little remains of the former glory of steam navigation on the Rhine. In September 1939, the Köln-Düsseldorfer still had 22 steamers, and even in freight transport, steam navigation reached its peak before World War II. In 1935, over 1800 steamships were registered on the Rhine, including 115 paddleboats, which are the powerful, round vessels.
