For the training and education of the working class, more is needed than just the acquisition of technically applicable knowledge. In suitable educational processes, Oskar Negt sees the only opportunity to encourage workers to adopt a sociological way of thinking: a way of thinking that allows for the processing of rapidly changing information in a way that motivates action. Only through this can a sense of self-awareness develop to counteract the bureaucratic stagnation of mass organizations and parties. "Sociological imagination and exemplary learning" emerged before a time when, after decades of stagnation, productive approaches for fundamentally changing the education system were developed for the first time, especially by protest movements, and bears all the hallmarks of a program seeking new orientations in a phase of political upheaval.
