Around 400,000 chamois inhabit the Alps, while the nearly extinct ibex have made a comeback with 50,000 individuals across 178 populations. The non-native mouflon population stands at 120,000 animals, which can also be found in northern and central German hunting grounds. Climate change and increased natural resource use in the Alps by athletes and tourists, as well as interactions with other wild and domestic animals, have a significant impact on the existing chamois and ibex populations, while the mouflon population is particularly affected by the return of wolves. The biology, lifestyle, requirements, management, diseases, and hunting of all three native horned species are thoroughly addressed.
