Product details

Hanna Dauberger and Minni Schwarz created the most important source on the whisper joke in Austria during the Third Reich with the publication of their collections in 1946/47. Some of these jokes cost their whisperers their lives under the Nazi regime. However, interpreting them as instruments of active resistance against fascism would be exaggerated. Rather, they are documents of rejection, verbalization of personal feelings, and, not least, expressions of societal conditions. With this book, sociologist Reinhard Müller makes the 552 jokes accessible again for the first time. Accompanied by important notes on backgrounds and ambiguities, and supplemented by over 100 jokes from Germany, he highlights what is typically Austrian and thus enables the reconstruction of a piece of local history and culture. The editor: Reinhard Müller.
