The "Mühlviertler Hasenjagd" - the mass escape of about 500 Soviet officers from the "death block" of the Mauthausen concentration camp on February 2, 1945 - stands like few other events in contemporary history for the Nazi extermination policy on Austrian soil, as well as for the involvement of the Austrian civilian population in these crimes. Although this story is widely known both nationally and internationally, particularly through Andreas Gruber's film "Out of Cowardice There Is No Mercy," little has been known about the victims and the few survivors until now. This volume attempts to fill this gap by utilizing extensive source materials from Austrian, German, Russian, and Ukrainian archives and private collections, analyzing the background of the "Mühlviertler Hasenjagd," and tracing the paths of the victims.
