In the years 1932/33, the mayor of Wörgl, Michael Unterguggenberger, introduced what is known as "Schwundgeld" in his community, a parallel currency alongside the official schilling. This initiated a currency experiment amidst the Great Depression, which has since garnered significant attention and imitation not only in Austria but also in many other countries around the world. This book presents the Wörgl Experiment for the first time comprehensively within the political and social context of that time, bringing readers close to the people and issues of that era. The Wörgl Experiment was, on one hand, a local village story, but at the same time, it was also part of the history of Tyrol and Austria—and, in a certain sense, a part of world economic history!
