This volume examines the picture book from a text-linguistic perspective and understands it as a bimodal medium that, through a historically and culturally evolved process, not only specializes in the needs of two heterogeneous target groups (reading adults and children) but also perfects the interplay between language and image. For this reason, it represents a very fruitful research source for recent text-linguistic approaches that deal with the phenomenon of multimodal texts and the connection of their constituents into a whole. Since the picture book consists of language and image, particular attention is drawn to questions concerning the interplay of the two sign systems and illuminating the potential of their connection. What are the characteristics of language and image? Can they leverage their strengths and unfold their possibilities?.
