In the early 1970s, women in Tyrol began to organize themselves in the context of the New Women's Movement, questioning traditionally assigned female roles and developing self-determined ways of living. They politicized topics that were often considered private and frequently identified gender relations as power and violence relations. Feminist analyses and self-organized knowledge production have entered the consciousness of many and expanded the possibilities for action within institutions. The largely unwritten history of autonomous women's groups, projects, and initiatives, the engagement of women in institutional contexts, as well as achievements and setbacks, are examined here by authors who are all active in the women's movement in Tyrol.
