Product details
With the two-volume novel "The Jeromin Children" (published in 1945 and 1947), Ernst Wiechert crafted an impressive chronicle of a peasant family in Masuria, the author's homeland, during the time of the two World Wars. The story follows the Jeromin family in the village of Sowirog, particularly focusing on the fate of Jons Ehrenreich Jeromin, a modest and virtuous man. The village, secluded deep in the wilderness, serves as the center of the narrative. Here, Wiechert also promoted a meaningful "simple life," as reflected in the title of his 1939 novel, in harmony with God and the rhythm of nature. This first volume addresses Jons' childhood and his school years in the city, which stands in contrast to his hometown. After graduating from high school, Jons becomes a soldier in World War I until he is wounded and taken to a hospital. Eventually, he returns for a short time.
