In 1887, the writer Stéphen Liégeard became the namesake of the region with his travel guide La Côte d'Azur, laying the foundation for the growing fame and even myth of this coast. In his work, he exuberantly praises the languid, sun-drenched Menton stretching out on its rocks, the extravagant Nice, which smiles behind a fan scented with violets, and the sun-drenched Cannes, ignited especially for duchesses. By the late 19th century, the area had become a place of longing for English aristocrats, American dandy, and international artists, and it has remained so for a diverse audience to this day.
