The Künstlerhaus was founded in 1978 by artists from Stuttgart and has since developed into a regionally and internationally recognized institution for contemporary art. Artistic directors change every four to five years, along with the curatorial concept. This publication, released to celebrate the 40th anniversary, tells the story of curating through the examples of the artistic directors. Artists who were able to realize artistic projects here at the beginning of their careers, such as Douglas Gordon, Susanne Kriemann, Olafur Eliasson, Sharon Lockhart, Roman Signer, Oscar Tuazon, and many more, share their experiences. Personalities from the art scene provide their statements on the special significance of this house.
