Addiction cannot be explained without a compulsive need. Needs and their satisfaction are closely linked to the subjective possibilities and opportunities within our society. In this respect, political demands for bans on alcohol and other recreational substances, especially among young people, or addiction policy goals such as abstinence are pointless as long as we live in a society that negates the human need for a happy life.
