Abstract: According to the 2008 Drug and Addiction Report by the Federal Ministry of Health, 1.3 million people in Germany are dependent on alcohol, and 1.4 to 1.5 million are dependent on medication. There is a high number of unreported cases regarding the consumption of illegal drugs, with estimates ranging from 167,000 to 198,000 people consuming illegal drugs in a problematic manner. If we consider that each alcohol-dependent person has three relatives, this results in an average of 3.9 million affected relatives, spouses, and children. Given these figures, it is difficult to understand why there are still so few established support systems, particularly for the children of people with addiction issues.
