The southwestern quarter of France extends widely between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. It offers a great variety of scenic attractions and difficulty levels, ranging from relatively flat regions like the Atlantic coast to low, diverse hilly areas in the Aquitaine Basin and mountain ranges such as the Auvergne and the Central Massif, all the way to high mountain ranges in the Pyrenees. Key points of the route network consisting of 165 suggested trails are Clermont-Ferrand in the northeast, Montpellier in the southeast, La Rochelle in the northwest, and St-Jean-de-Luz in the southwest.
