A stranger
German, Hermann Lenz, 1988Product details
"From now on, I have to earn money," says Eugen Rapp to himself as his savings dwindle after the currency reform of 1948, while he is a freelance writer in the attic of his parents' house. He becomes the secretary of the barely viable Stuttgart cultural association and soon finds himself in a storage room of the old theater. This is a job and not an office, he comforts himself and his wife, despite the low pay. However, it soon becomes clear that menial tasks and improvisational ingenuity must know no bounds. After all, a world enters his life, filled with the fauna of rare patrons, countless petitioners, and invited speakers. Rapp is also invited to the "Group 47" conference, where he must sit on the "electric chair," read aloud, and be judged. Never before has literary pandemonium been described so accurately. The books of Rapp, who aligns with neither direction nor fashion.
