Contemporary art is often assumed to owe its existence to certain theories and does not produce any immediate aesthetic effect on its own. If these voices were correct, it would be enough to follow the theoretical debates about art - one could confidently forgo engaging with the works themselves. Martin Seel objects to such a reduction and counters it with a proposal for an aesthetics that is based on the unique appearance of artworks.
