Between 1975 and 1981, Peter Weiss published his literary masterpiece, titled The Aesthetics of Resistance. The novel was and remains a cult book. Who does not know the opening scene, the analysis of the Pergamon Altar in Berlin in 1937 by members of the underground, and the final, melancholy-laden reflections on the possible futility of resistance against fascism? There have been numerous attempts to indicate the singularity of the Aesthetics of Resistance: some compared the work to Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time, others felt reminded of James Joyce's Ulysses, and still others to Walter Benjamin's Passagen-Werk. The two editions, in West Germany published by Suhrkamp Verlag, Frankfurt am Main, and in East Germany from 1983 by Henschel Verlag, East Berlin, differ primarily in the text of the third part.
