Alice in Sussex
German, Nicolas Mahler, 2013Product details
Alice finds herself in the land of dreams. There, she meets the white rabbit, who leads her into his underground burrow to search for an illustrated edition of H.C. Artmann's "Frankenstein in Sussex." Throughout the story, Alice encounters the rabbit repeatedly, who also quotes from other literary works, whether from Herman Melville or E.M. Cioran. Unlike Carroll's Alice, this one is not in Wonderland, but in a deep house underground. There, she encounters the well-known creations of Lewis Carroll on different floors: the pipe-smoking caterpillar, the grinning cat, the soup turtle, and many others. These creatures repeatedly address the horrors of childhood and youth. When Alice reaches the ground floor of the house and meets Frankenstein's monster, she awakens from her terrible dream.
